exploring french polynesia: pre-depature guidebook for your journey
If you have had French Polynesia on your bucket list for a little while now & have made the steps to book it, CONGRATS. You are about to have a trip of a lifetime. Here are some tips + tricks — which include things I wish I had known beforehand — that will make your experience in French Polynesia even more seamless.
So, let’s get excited. You are about to swim in the turquoise waters of the South Pacific, meet sharks and stingrays, eat probably the freshest raw fish you’ll have in your life, meet kind locals, and indulge in the epitome of an iconic island getaway. First things first:
1. book out of LA with Air tahiti
With Air Tahiti, you’ll start you Polynesia adventure already with a bang. It’s about a 6.5 hour flight, and super seamless. And let me tell you, Air Tahiti is hands down the most vibrant and lively airline you'll ever come across (the seats are turquoise. What can I say? I am a fan of the little things!). But here's the cherry on top: the atmosphere. The entire flight is filled with a contagious sense of excitement and anticipation of people visiting the islands. You'll be surrounded by fellow adventurers (I literally could barely sit the whole flight).
2. know some basic french
While English is widely spoken in Polynesia, knowing a few basic French phrases will add an extra dose of kindness to your journey. French is their native tongue, and taking the time to learn some greetings will make your interactions even more delightful! So brush up on phrases like "Bonjour" (hello), "Merci" (thank you), and "Au revoir" (goodbye) to let the locals know your appreciation.
3. Find a High-up Airbnb in Tahiti
Y’all. Get an Airbnb on a mountain top. TRUST me. For an photo-worthy experience, try snagging an a stay with a view of Mo’orea (another island closeby). We stumbled upon this hidden gem of an Airbnb, nestled high up on a mountain, and let me tell you, it was like magic. Palm trees swaying in the breeze, colorful flowers everywhere, and the most incredible panoramic views you can imagine. It was pure tropical bliss. (Check out the Airbnb link here). And if you have a big group going, it’s really not too expensive.
4. explore other islands
Don't limit yourself to just Tahiti! The real magic happens when you island-hop. We went to Mo’orea, just a short 45-minute ferry ride away for half of our trip, but there are tons of options to fly to domestically. Each island offers something different — whether you’re going to a romantic getaway, want to lace up your hiking boots and do some outdoor adventuring, or want to explore marine life. Just do a little research before you go!
5. zip around the other islands on scooters
Ready to feel the wind in your hair and the sun on your face? Rent some scooters and zip around the islands! It's an absolute blast and the ultimate way to discover the hidden corners of paradise. While Tahiti's bigger size and industrial vibe may call for a car to navigate its busy streets, Mo'orea is a whole different story. For the ultimate island exploration, grab a scooter (room for two!) and embark on a breathtaking journey through Mo'orea's stunning landscapes.
6. indulge in raw fish and poisson cru
The culinary experience of French Polynesia could honestly make my eyes water. You are about to have the BEST raw fish of your life & the mouthwatering Polynesian favorite of Poisson Cru (raw fish, fresh veggies, and coconut milk). I would book a ticket there alone to have their local cuisine on the water.
7. embrace the stick shift
If you plan on renting a car, make sure someone in your crew is comfortable with a stick shift in Tahiti. It's all part of the fun and adds an adventurous twist to your road trips (even if you stall out a time or two). Feel free to ditch the car when you are trekking to other small islands like Mo’orea.
8. hire a tour guide for hiking
To make the most of your hiking experiences on the main island, most hikes require you to book a tour guide. They know the secret trails, breathtaking viewpoints, and fascinating stories that will take your exploration to the next level. Most of the islands’ hikes can be a little sketchy for the average hiker, so be sure to look into this before hand.
9. embark on an adventure boat tour
This was one of the most memorable days of the trip! Booking an adventure boat tour with the locals will allow you to discover little hiking gems, get tidbits about the culture, eat more amazing food, and see more of the landscape. We did a tour around Teau’poo in Tahiti.
10. embrace the off-season
Don't shy away from planning your trip during the off-season. French Polynesia enjoys a temperate climate year-round, making any time the perfect time to visit. Our crew went in November, and the weather couldn't have been more perfect (and you have the gift of a less-packed season.
11. catch whales in the summer
If you're eager to witness majestic whales during your trip, plan your visit in the summer months. Whale season ends in October, so make sure you don't miss out on the awe-inspiring sight of these magnificent creatures. We never got to witness this, so just another excuse to add to the list to go to next time!
